Amarante A.F.T., Rocha R.A. & Bricarello P.A. 2006. Relationship of intestinal histology with the resistance to Trichostrongylus colubriformis infection in three breeds of sheep. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 26(1):43-48. Departamento de Parasitologia, Instituto de Biociências, Universidade Estadual Paulista (Unesp), Cx. Postal 510, Botucatu, SP 18618-000, Brazil. E-mail: [email protected] The study was carried out to evaluate the relationship of inflammatory intestinal cells with the resistance to Trichostrongylus colubriformis infections in three breeds of sheep (Santa Ines, Suffolk and Ile de France), naturally infected. Mast cells, eosinophils, and globule leucocytes were enumerated in intestinal mucosa. Histamine concentration was estimated in intestinal tissue samples and the length of male and female specimens were determined. The three breeds of sheep showed similar cellular response in the small intestine mucosa (P>0.05). There was extensive variation among sheep in the parasitological and inflammatory cell variables, even in lambs of the same breed. In general, animals presenting less inflammatory cells had a larger worm burden, higher fecal egg counts, and larger T. colubriformis worms. The inflammatory cells possibly impaired the parasite’s establishment, development, and survival.

Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus colubriformis in pen-trials with Javanese thin tail sheep and Kacang cross Etawah goats.

Weight gain costs due to infection were higher in sheep than goats, 28 and 17.5%, respectively, for Trichostrongylus colubriformis and 48.7 and 32.2%, respectively, for Haemonchus contortus. The extent of bodyweight cost attributed to anorexia in sheep infected with H. contortus was higher (13.5 g/day) than in sheep infected with T. colubriformis (2.3 g/day). On the other hand, bodyweight cost ...

Small Intestinal Helminth Parasites in Slaughtered Sheep and Goats in Hawassa, Southern Ethiopia

This study was carried out from November 2007 to March 2008 to identify the species and to determine the burden of small intestinal helminth parasites of sheep and goats slaughtered in Hawassa, southern Ethiopia. Intestines of 116 sheep and 71 goats were examined using standard procedures. Three species of parasites namely Trichostrongylus colubriformis, Bunostomum trigonocephalum and Moniezia ...

Regulation of Teladorsagia circumcincta and Trichostrongylus colubriformis worm populations by grazing sheep with differing resistance status.

In an experiment lasting 4 years, changes in the Teladorsagia circumcincta and Trichostrongylus colubriformis populations were compared in lambs and adult sheep with differing resistance statuses. Two flocks of 30 rams (resistant R and susceptible S) grazed separate pastures and 8 rams were slaughtered in the middle and at the end of each grazing season. Five groups of tracer lambs were added e...

Trichostrongylus colubriformis: Possible Most Common Cause of Human Infection in Mazandaran Province, North of Iran

BACKGROUND Infection with Trichostrongylus spp. is common among human and herbivorous in most parts of Iran, especially in southern and northern areas. The aim of present study was to identify Trichostrongylus spp. among human population using excreted egg specimens, by the molecular method, in Mazandaran Province, northern Iran. METHODS Overall, 33 positive fecal specimens were randomly samp...

Selective breeding for the control of nematodiasis in sheep.

Genetic manipulation of sheep by selective breeding offers a means to reduce the current reliance on chemotherapy for the control of gastro-intestinal nematodes. Simulated epidemiological studies support this view as, compared to lambs of 'normal' susceptibility, those 'selected' for resistance to Trichostrongylus colubriformis have lower worm burdens and reduced production losses. Considerable...
